Bunion Deformity

A bunion deformity, also known as a hallux valgus, presents itself at first as a bump on the side of your foot adjacent to or just below the big toe. That causes the big toe to point inward, towards the second toe and can cause stability problems with the rest of the bones in the patient’s foot. It is a condition that begins long before the bump appears. Commonly reported symptoms are pain, inflammation, redness, burning sensations, and numbness. Wearing tight shoes can further aggravate the condition and symptoms. Dr. Bill Releford will follow the progression of the disorder via periodic x-rays and will base the best treatment plan off of that. Ease of symptoms is typically the starting point in treatment, with changes in footwear, padding, and activities initially. Other possible remedies are non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID) such as ibuprofen, icing, orthotic devices, and cortisone injections. The patient may also be a candidate for platelet-rich plasma injection therapy. In cases where non-surgical options do not work, and the pain interferes with the patient’s day to day activities is surgery considered.
